Packing

Packing simply defines the action of putting an order into a package, i.e., preparing an order for a customer.

packing

This is the stage that follows picking: the shopping cart has been validated, and the items are grouped together before being arranged to be packed for dispatch to the buyer.

The order picker will then put the products into packages to travel to their destination.

The picker's work surface is called a packing table. This space is designed to facilitate the repetitive tasks involved in this stage of the logistics chain. It often contains the following:

  • cardboard boxes of various sizes
  • essential supplies depending on the type of product being sold (bubble wrap, silk film, etc.)
  • tools needed for securing items (scissors, tape, etc.)
  • papers and labels required to send the parcel
  • a software suite to create labels and administrative documents (computer, printer, etc.)

The packing phase is a very important element in ecommerce to ensure optimal customer service. At this stage, you need to avoid as many errors or oversights as possible, by controlling all aspects of package creation.

Some companies choose to use order processing software to better pack orders: this often involves the order picker scanning an order to display all the items to be inserted into the package. This enables real-time stock tracking and ensures that nothing is forgotten before shipment. In the event of an error, the software will warn the picker so that steps can be taken to correct it.

Packing is also the stage at which invoices are added to the package. Some retailers also add invitations to their private sales or promotional offers on the next order, via flyers inserted in the box, bag, envelope, etc.

Packing includes choosing the right packaging at the best price as well: this will ensure that items are protected and well packed during shipping, transport, and delivery, but it will also offer a quality customer experience thanks to personalized and original packaging.

What's more, the size of the packaging and the materials chosen become arguments for consumers, who are becoming increasingly concerned about protecting the environment. By using recycled and recyclable materials and leaving no gaps in their cartons, ecommerce companies are banking on environmental protection and sustainability, while simultaneously boosting their brand image.

Packing is a very important stage in any ecommerce business, with a full list of precise tasks: nothing should be left to chance.
